Beyond Retro: Coming to Stoke Newington High Street

Beyond Retro are opening a store on Stoke Newington Church Street.
Let the celebrations commence!

I must have walked past this tattered poster so many times before noticing it
(and its significance to my wardrobe) this morning whilst walking to Pelicans and Parrots. I'm not sure when the store is opening but when it does, I'm sure that it will be the equivalent of Forever21's Oxford Street opening day stampede. If anyone knows when it is opening then please let me know.

Flamingo Arts Project, Private View

On Thursday I attended the Flamingo Arts Magazine private view of their first art project at Betty's Cafe, Kingsland Road.

The idea was to bring together and showcase the best up-and-coming illustration talent in London. The nine artists displayed one composition each. The aim of the Flamingo Arts Magazine is to support and promote new talent.

I liked what I saw but the setting was cramped and there were only nine pieces on view. I'd like to see more in the future with perhaps a bigger display space.

Miu Miu Resort 2012

My favourite look from the Miu Miu Resort 2012 collection. I love the clashing gingham, floral and patterned prints in pastel shades, and the way that they have played with the dressed-up excess of the 80s in such an ironic manner. Another success for Miuccia!

Shopping Spree: American Apparel, Topshop and Uniqlo

This weekend I went on a small-scale shopping spree, to buy some basics for my wardrobe. Here is what I came home with (from top left):

1. Uniqlo grey skinny jeans - I have been meaning to try Uniqlo's jeans for ages as so many people say they are the best on the high street. This has been confirmed!

2. American Apparel V-Neck T-Shirt - If these are good enough to grace the wardrobe of the Olsen twins...

3. Topshop grey round-neck jumper - The perfect style for lounging round the house, and dress-down days.

4. American Apparel bra - Super-comfortable and eye-catching. I love the bikini-esque feel. Forever summer!

5. More American Apparel V-Neck T-Shirts and bras - Can you tell there was a deal on? Buy three save 15%

Kenwood House and

This weekend me and my boyfriend ventured to Kenwood House
in Hampstead Heath for the first time.
It is a beautiful old family estate once belonging to the Mansfield family,
and is now in the hands of English Heritage.

We spent the day exploring the house, and its impressive art collection,
and lounging on the lawns.
A perfect way to spend a lazy summer's afternoon.

Afterwards

The art collection was incredible featuring several paintings by Van Dyck, Vermeer, Reynolds, Gainsborough, Constable,

Whilst browsing through one of my favourite weekly reads, Another Magazine 'Loves' list,
I came across this beautiful parrot charm with a turquoise egg.
What a beauty - it stole the show!

S/S Beauty Trends

Forget the sophisticated palettes from last autumn/winter, and say goodbye to the sultry vamp and 70s golden girl looks that dominated every catwalk, fashion editorial and high street near you. There are several looks that define this season from summer brights on eyes and lips, blocked colour (from pastels to metallics), and glowing and luminous skin.

Natural Glow

Autumn/winter’s neutral tones have heightened to luminous and glowing skin this summer as seen at Stella McCartney, Vera Wang and Balmain.

The key to this look is keeping everything minimalist yet radiant. A flawless complexion is key, but it is also important to create a defined eye to work alongside. Apply a chocolate brown eyeshadow along top, bottom and eye socket. Finally, apply a healthy peach or pink shade of blusher.

Get the natural glow look: NARS Laguna Bronzer, NARS Oragasm Illuminator, Rituals Sundance Cheek & Eye Glow, Topshop Skin Glow.

Strong and groomed eyebrows

Strong and groomed eyebrows have been a favourite with heavyweight designers such as Vera Wang. With this look try channelling model-of-the-moment Arizona Muse and her striking brows.

Eyebrows are natural this season and to achieve this look keep them as full and straight as possible. Add texture by using a brow colour that matches your hair shade, and opt for the less-damaging threading than waxing to maintain the

shape.

Get the strong and groomed eyebrows look: HD Brows Eyes & Brows Palette, MAC Impeccable Brow Pencil, Benefit Brow Zing, No7 Precision Brow Pencil.

Bright Lips

Bright lipstick has been making a steady comeback for several seasons now, and this summer is set to offer the biggest yet. Bright lipstick made an appearance at numerous catwalk shows including bold orange lips at Fendi, glossy reds at Unique and matt pink at Diane Von Furstenberg.

Bright lips are essential for this season’s return to extreme glamour, choose shades from fuchsia to burgundy, and from matt to gloss. To stay ahead of the crowd, choose orange as this year’s antidote to screen siren red.

Get the bright lipstick look: MAC Ruby Woo, Topshop Hazard, No7 Tangerine Touch, Rituals Smart Lipstick, Tom Ford Private Blend Lip Color in Ginger Fawn.

Colourful Eyes

One of the key trends this summer is a brightly coloured eye. This look was showcased at many shows for S/S 11 including emerald greens at Issa, and striking pastels at Dior and Versace.

Put your chocolate browns and charcoal greys aside as jewel-tones and pastels are essential for this look. Injecting colour on to your lids is perfect for long summer nights and adds a certain freshness.

Get the colourful eye look: Rituals Scuba Eye Pencil, MAC Full Force Voilet Pigment, Barry M Dazzle Dust Bright Emerald, NARS Mangrove.

Hot 8 Brass Band, Sexual Healing

I have am currently playing this song for the fifth time in a row, and love it! Tune in to listen to the Hot 8 Brass Band play Marvin Gaye’s ‘Sexual Healing’. I thought that no cover would be able to do this song justice, however this definitely does!

Nirrimi Hakanson Photography

If you haven’t yet seen the photography of Nirrimi Hakanson then get ready to be impressed. I discovered her after a friend recently recommend that I look at her collection. These photos have such a raw beauty that I can’t stop looking at them. I still can’t quite believe that Nirrimi is just 18!

Nirrimi has been photographing since she was 13 and is heavily inspired by her bucolic northern Queensland home. All of her photos have a certain naivety and youthful feel about them.

Check out Nirrimi Hakanson’s blog for more photos.

Vogue: The September Issue

It's here, the time of year that we fashion-lovers look forward to;
the September issues!
I love traipsing to the local newsagents and buying
a small stack of September issues,
then returning home to a cup of Earl Grey and greedily gorging on them all.

Above is the cover of Vogue UK's September issue with,
everyone's favourite model of the moment, Freja Beha Erichsen.

Florence and the Machine Wears Gucci on US Tour

Florence and the Machine selected Gucci to dress her for her recent US tour. I've been meaning to write about this for a couple of weeks but have finally got round to it... Anyway, a huge round of applause is needed for head designer Frida Giannini for creating such beautiful dresses in Florence’s typical dreamy and ethereal style. Visually, the results were amazing: what a match made in fashion heaven!

Frida Giannini said of the collaboration:

"When Florence first came onto the scene, I was captivated by her eccentric style and her willingness to dare," says Giannini, "I felt there was such an authentic energy to her sound and her look. This was confirmed when I met her at the Grammys earlier this year. I used one of Florence's songs, 'Hurricane Drunk,' to set the mood for my Autumn Winter women's show, as she was truly an inspiration for this collection as a modern day icon with her cinematic allure and powerful presence."

Florence Welch responded:

"I was extremely flattered when I heard that Frida's collection had been inspired in part by my performances, and I was completely bowled over by her collection, the dresses seemed perfect for my shows, the colours, the shapes, the movement in the fabric. So it seemed natural that we work together on creating some pieces for my upcoming U.S. tour. I'm very grateful to Frida. It's been a wonderful experience, and I can't wait to get dressed for the stage!
